Looking ahead to SIRIS 1H - Authority Structure

The campus release of SIRIS 1H, the census data, is just around the corner, so we wanted to share some details about how authority will be structured. SIRIS 1H will consist of an ad hoc environment as well as a single “Census Autumn Enrollment” dashboard, which will allow users to see enrollment numbers (at the time of the census) for all of the university’s schools, programs, plans, and degree levels, with additional breakdowns by gender and URM grouping.

Unlike SIRIS 1, ad hoc vs. dashboard access will be set at a different point in the authority granting process. A single new privilege has been created - “Census User”. Under this privilege, authority grantors will then be able to select from three options “Ad hoc Regular”, “Dashboard Regular” and “Dashboard Summary”.

The three options will grant the user the following capabilities:

Dashboard Summary - This will allow the user to see aggregate enrollment statistics in the single ”Census Autumn Enrollment” dashboard. Users will not be able to drill down to the individual student level, and the intention is to mask entries with fewer than five students. The goal is for this role to be widely available to interested parties across campus, since all of the information visible to this user is restricted to summary enrollment numbers and no personally identifiable information will be available.

Dashboard Regular - This role will allow the user to access the “Census Autumn Enrollment” dashboard where they will be able to see aggregate enrollment statistics, however, this role will have the additional capability to drill down into the statistics to the individual student record level. The “Dashboard Regular” user will be able to not only see how many PhD students are in a given department, but also a list of their names and ID numbers. Gender and URM grouping information, however, is not available or visible at the individual student level.

Ad hoc Regular - This role is comparable to the Ad hoc privilege in SIRIS 1, and gives the user the ability to create custom queries with any of the fields available in SIRIS 1H. In an upcoming newsletter, we’ll provide more details about some of the differences between the ad hoc fields in SIRIS 1 and 1H. As with SIRIS 1, this role should be reserved for users who have a high level of familiarity with student data and are comfortable taking an increased level of responsibility for safeguarding that data.

SIRIS 2 Kickoff Meeting!

We know that many of you are anxiously awaiting the arrival of SIRIS 2, which will bring information about courses, classes, and instruction into SIRIS. This past month, members of IR&DS and Administrative Systems met for the official SIRIS 2 project kickoff! While we don’t yet have a finalized development timeline, it was fun to dive in and begin the conversation with our partners about building this much-needed data infrastructure for the university.

SAKE in November

We’ll be meeting at 11am on Monday 11/28 in Littlefield 243. This is our last SAKE of the year and so we’re going to try something a little different! After a brief update on the status of SIRIS 1H, we’d like to open it up to *your* questions and concerns. Have you been running into any obstacles in using SIRIS or reporting on students more generally? Do you have questions about what fields to use or how to find information in the dashboards? Bring your stickiest dilemmas and most basic questions and we will tackle them together.

A new Scavenger Hunt!

First of all, congratulations to last month’s “Successful SIRIS Scavenger”, Marianne Liang, who submitted the correct answer to our question: In the School of Humanities and Sciences, which department awarded the highest number of Ph.D.s to women from 2011-12 through 2015-16? How many were awarded? Answer: 57 Ph.D.s were awarded to women by the Biology Dept. during this time. We hope Marianne enjoyed her prize! (To find the answer yourself, use the “Degree Study Field By Gender” tab on the “Degrees Conferred” dashboard. Select H&S as the School and Degree Code as PHD and click to apply. Next, scroll down below the bar chart and select Show Results for “Totals by Degree Study Field”.)
