SUDS-STU is Back!
Mark your calendars! Regular meetings of the “student” chapter of the Stanford University Data Stewardship group (SUDS-STU) will resume next month to discuss the data dictionary entries for the terms appearing in SIRIS 2 (Course and Class Enrollment). If a spirited debate about the meaning of “crosslisted class” or “enrolled student” sounds appealing, we encourage you to attend the meetings.

No SAKE this month
There will be no Student Analytics Knowledge Exchange this month, as many of us will be at the annual conference of the Higher Education Data Warehousing Forum.

New in the SIRIS Report Library - “Time in graduate degree programs”
One of the nice features of the new SIRIS Report Library is that it allows us to share dashboards and reports developed by the SIRIS user community! In this newsletter, we want to highlight one such recent addition, developed by the School of Engineering, which provides a window into how long current masters and doctoral students have been in their degree plans. Departments and programs may find it useful for a variety of reporting needs, such as defining cohorts of graduate students, looking at patterns in leave-taking and summer enrollment, or tracking how long individual students have been around.
All SIRIS users have access to the Report Library, and you can find the time-in-degree dashboard in the OBIEE Catalog under Shared Folders > Student Analytics > Report Library >General Reference Reports > Plan and Term Enrollment > “Time in graduate degree programs”.
Once you open the dashboard, you’ll be taken to the “Home” page, which has an explanation of the various ways the report calculates time-in-degree. There are two additional page tabs, one for Doctoral students and one for Masters students. You can select your department and which degrees you’d like to include in the analysis, and click apply to see the results for all the students currently active or on leave for that department and degree(s). The dashboard provides a number of different views, including aggregate counts of students by enrolled and elapsed terms, as well as a list of individual students, and options to count years with or without summer terms. Note that this report is specifically about time-in-degree, as opposed to time-to-degree, since only current students are included, not students who have completed their degrees. A more detailed explanation of how enrollment is determined can be found here.
One final additional caveat is that this dashboard was developed by the School of Engineering and that it has not been tested for other departments and programs. Users outside of SOE should proceed with caution when interpreting results. That said, we are very interested in any feedback from users across the university—take a look and let us know what you think!

Fix - “Student Address” Folder now visible
We had recently discovered that the “Student Address” folder was not appearing in the adhoc reporting folder structure for our adhoc users who have the requisite authority and access. This folder would normally be visible as a subfolder of “Student Contact Information” and includes reporting fields such as Home Address and Local Address. We’re happy to report that this issue has now been fixed, and all users who have the ability to access student contact information in the adhoc reporting environment should be able to see this folder.
New Director position in IR&DS
A new position has been created in IR&DS that will oversee DSS, SIRIS, and other BI (Business Intelligence) activities in the group. We are looking for an experienced technical professional—someone proficient in the data warehousing/BI arena, with management experience, and skilled at communicating with high-level constituents.
